While the natural earth is characterized by relationships on
many levels, relationships also structure the man-made world. From the
intrapersonal to the global, relationships are both reflected in and directed
by man-made media. The sign/signifier becomes the basic entity;
relationships are between signifiers. By presenting an oil and water
interaction pattern (a unique, natural entity) in a media space (a context in
which we expect to find a sign/signifier) we can experience each from the
perspective provided by their mutual deconstruction: the natural entity
subverts the medium by invading its space, and the medium distorts the natural
entity into a sign by determining its presentation. We get a deeper sense
of the relationship between the natural earth and the man-made world.
