The oil and water interaction patterns are records of unique, self-organized
systems of co-evolving elements. As such, they are records of
relationships on many levels, from the microscopic to that of the system as a
whole. Relationships also embed each system in its surroundings,
influencing its course of development and its resulting overall form. By
presenting an interaction pattern so that we see it only as itself, (and not as
resembling something else), we are in a better position to focus on the many
levels and contexts of causal relationships. We can become more aware of
dynamic interrelatedness, and of how complexity can emerge. Since we
cannot always perceive all these levels at once, we find ourselves in a
perceptual relationship involving more than just a one way registration of
surface appearance. We might even find ourselves investigating perception
itself and its relationship to process and structure, and to intention and
imagination.
