I start by placing a drop of an oil paint mixture on the surface of water. As this series of photographs shows, the oil mixture spreads across the surface of the water and progressively organizes itself into an intricate pattern. I then capture this pattern on paper or canvas. Because this oil and water interaction is spontaneous and self-organizing, nature is not just represented but is physically present in the work as the captured pattern. My role as artist consists of mixing the oil paint, placing the paint mixture, capturing the pattern (and thereby stopping the process if it hadn't already), and choosing the presentation. The pattern is nature's own, and the resulting art work is thus a collaboration.
