Schwei Studios is located in Highland about 60 miles WNW of Madison,
Wisconsin. Highland has a population of almost 800 hard-working, caring people.
It has its own school system as well as a bank, post office, grocery store, two
churches, a gas station, hardware store, two insurance dealers, a restaurant,
two car dealers, a beauty shop, medical clinic, two bars, and a funeral home.
Our commute to work there is nine miles of county highway during which we
usually see more wildlife (deer, eagles, fox and woodchucks) than we do other
vehicles.
The land where our studio now stands was part of the 40 acres obtained in 1836
from the United States government. The parcel was incorporated into the Village
of Highland in 1873. In approximately 1940, the current building was erected to
be used by the Highland Produce Company for candling eggs and sorting
vegetables. The structure was manufactured by Trachte using basically the same
method it originally used to make cattle watering tanks — sort of the rural
equivalent to an urban industrial site.
Schwei Studios is a working shop and does not usually have items displayed for
viewing. However, about twice each year we clear out an area, put up art work
and send out announcements. If you would like to know when the next open studio
will be, please sign up for our mailing list.
