In 1971, I was in a parachuting accident which resulted in a spinal cord injury. Currently, I use two canes to travel short distances and a wheelchair to move longer distances. I am thankful for these tools, but I like people I encounter to view them as accessories not as the most important part of me. Therefore, I often embellish them. I have begun to experiment with using art to comment on how people see people with disabilities and their assistive technology. When I have something worth "putting out there", this is where it will appear. Meanwhile, I have been working on a series of rattles. The handles are from our woods and the gourds were grown in our garden. Inside the gourd I place seeds, appropriate beads and a quartz crystal. Then, I embellish with beads, vintage costume jewelry, paint and glitter. Pictures coming soon! |
